Bormio, in the heart of the Alta Valtellina, is known as La Magnifica Terra (the Magnificent Land) for the thousand-year history that has shaped its territory and culture. In winter, the passion for skiing finds its place here, and it is no coincidence that the Stelvio slope has been called the ‘Teatro alla Scala of winter sports’. Folklore in Bormio is a serious matter and, precisely during this time of year, it is easy to come across ancient revivals, folk traditions and processions that pass through the ‘contrade’ (districts).

In one of these ancient districts, that of Combo, a wooden crucifix of legendary origins is kept, to which miraculous powers are attributed. We are talking about the Holy Crucifix in the church of St Anthony Abbot. Legend has it that an inhabitant of Valfurva escaped a thunderbolt that struck the tree under which he had sought shelter. On the trunk broken by the thunderbolt, the shepherd recognized the figure of Christ, so, for the grace received, he carved the crucifix into it.

RECOMMENDED STARTING POINT: Bormio, Combo Bridge

This easy route allows you to admire the enchanting panorama of the Bormio basin from above. The starting point is the historic Combo Bridge, which, once crossed, leads left to the small church of Madonna del Sassello, from where you take the trail on the right towards Valfurva.
At Uzza, cross the bridge that takes the cycle path to the opposite side of the Frodolfo stream, following it until the church of St. Nicolò. Just opposite the churchyard, after crossing the provincial road, an uphill road leads to the upper part of the Teregua district, where you take the trail ascending the Uzza valley.
After two hairpin bends, the first to the right and the second to the left, continue straight until the path crosses the stream. Shortly after leaving the valley, the panoramic route begins, running along the heights above the town of Bormio, among larch forests and dwarf pines. Signs to the locality Pravasivo guide you to Planon dei Laresc and then to the Campello valley, the stream flowing from the slopes of the Réit. Without crossing it, the path descending towards Bormio marks the end of the hike.

We’re in Bormio, a renowned summer and winter tourist destination located in the Stelvio National Park. This route follows the cycle and pedestrian path, allowing for a relaxing and safe ride—perfect for families.

Starting from the Tourist Office, head toward the Frodolfo stream and follow the dedicated path along Via Italo Occhi. Continue on this track until you reach S. Lucia, where you briefly join the Sentiero Valtellina, running alongside the Adda River heading north toward the hamlet of Premadio.

On your left, after crossing a charming wooden bridge, a short dirt path leads to Planecc, a recreational area perfect for a picnic and a break with kids. Returning to the wooden bridge and rejoining the cycle path, you’ll reach the Church of San Gallo, known for its distinctive bell tower.

From there, ride back toward Bormio along the edge of the golf course, finishing at Bistrot Bormio Terme, where you can enjoy a well-deserved meal featuring Bresaola della Valtellina.
